Magazine editorial writing and long-form journalism

NKU MAGAZINE

As Director of Publications/Communications Manager for Northern Kentucky University, my job, in essence, is to serve as a chief storyteller. I lead our staff and editorial team through the creative process for multi-platform content production and partner with key stakeholders—legislators, community partners, faculty, and alumni—to support increased enrollment, market share, brand identity, and strategic goals of the university. I serve as digital and print editor of NKU Magazine, the university's flagship publication, and introduced and administrate the NKU Magazine mobile app (Adobe DPS)—a project executed while leading a top-to-bottom redesign and rebranding (and renaming) of the magazine in 2015.

I also serve as creator, producer and host of the Ask NKU podcast, the university's first official podcast launched in early 2016. Finally, I lead our editorial team through writing, assigning, and editing all digital content for Northern Kentucky University’s central news site, Inside NKU.

But WHAT ELSE, you ask? I support content production, technical advice, and editorial direction for university priorities, including print and digital news, the university's social media channels, development/donor publications, speech writing, and serve as liaison with key university community members, alumni, civic leaders, legislators, faculty, and staff. (Such as Tim Sofranko and Dionne Laycock, who created many of these images.)

CINCINNATI MAGAZINE

At Cincinnati Magazine, I served as lead editor for the magazine's monthly news + arts-and-culture section, Frontlines—the front-of-book (FOB) department where I learned to respect and love the editing and content curation process as much as I love long-form feature writing.

Above you'll find a small batch of feature, event, and FOB communications that I produced—authored or assigned and edited—during my tenure.

My central charge at Cincinnati Magazine was to conceptualize, write, assign, and edit original content across a spectrum of interests. I worked closely with the art department on design concepts and layout, evaluated and prioritized content and events for media coverage, and maintained a deep contact list of high-profile sources in the worlds of business, sports, the arts, and media.

I also wrote restaurant reviews. Lots of them. It was a delicious, demi-glaced dream.

Oh, but that's not all. I contributed as a department and feature writer (check out the long-form page), managed the publication's extensive dining guide, served as lead editor for the 2009-2010 Cincinnati City Guide, and generally loved my time working for this guy and with a smart, hilarious, and creative team.
